The initial 183-card Play Ball set was released in April, 2004. The set was issued in five-card packs with an $4 SRP which came 24 packs to a box and 14 boxes to a case. Cards numbered 1-132 feature a mix of today's leading stars as well as all-time greats. Card numbered 133-162 feature a mix of leading rookies and prospects. Those cards were inserted at a stated rate of one in 16 and were issued to a stated print run of 2004 serial numbered sets. Cards numbered 163 through 183 feature multi-player "classic combo" cards and those were inserted at a stated rate of one in 24 and were issued to a stated print run of 1999 serial numbered sets. A 50-card Update set (containing cards 183-232) was issued in factory set form and distributed randomly into one in every four hobby boxes of 2004 Upper Deck series 2 baseball in June 2004.
